Regarding VT Bill HB57

Dear Legislators and fellow Vermont citizens,
I write as a former fertilized egg, embryo, fetus and child.  I write as the product of an inconvenient pregnancy to an unwed mother.  I write as a mother, one who has carried each stage of pregnancy within my body and despite hardships, welcomed my children into the world.  I write as one who makes choices each day that affects the welfare of others and realizes that my choices have consequences not only for myself, but for others and I make better choices when I research my options and have access to resources that help me learn more
I am in awe at what little I know of the advances being made in science.  I have read that they have DNA tests that can identify your parents, siblings, and distant relatives.  I am amazed that we can look at a cell and see that every cell in our body is unique to us and that ½ of our DNA strand comes from each of our parents.  From the moment of fertilization, a new, unique unrepeatable cell line is created that will culminate in a unique unrepeatable living person and every cell in that person belongs singularly to that person.  We know that a child’s heart beats only 22 days after conception  and that a child born at only 22 weeks gestation can survive outside the womb.    It is amazing to me that the more we know through science about life, the less our society will acknowledge to be true when it comes to nascent human life.
.  Under HB 57, as written, a mother may choose “whether to give birth to a child or have an abortion.”[1]  When I look at this wording, I have to ask – “ Is a child only a child if a mother deems it to be child-worthy?  At what point is the new life in the mother considered a child – only when it is wanted?”   If this law is truly about choice – should there not also be information and support for the mother who desires to give birth to her child but needs the support of her community to make this decision.   What of the woman who desires to keep her child but the father will not pay to support the child but offers to pay for an abortion?  The law speaks about choice then only allows for unrestricted abortion – giving no options for adoption or child support.
In the legislature at this time, I read that there is also a bill in process to protect lab rats from experimentation that will allow them more rights that a human fetus.  There are no safeguards in HB 57 against the selling of the aborted fetus for scientific research, unrestricted abortion could lead to the trafficking in human cell lines for research.  HB 57, needs to have some protection to avoid the abortion of children for the purpose of scientific experimentation – no one should profit financially from the death of a human embryo or fetus or child. Under HB 57, the “A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus” will have no rights at all under Vermont law.  This goes way beyond current abortion laws set on Roe v. Wade and does not allow a mother whose unborn child is killed in a DUI accident to have recourse for the child she has lost.  What of an unborn child killed in an attack upon it’s mother?  This law does not have protection for a child that is born alive when the mother intended to abort it – do we then allow the living, born child to die?  Is this really what Vermont wants to be known for – a state that has kills it’s children with the most liberal abortion laws in the world?   I have read Art Wolf’s economics columns where he comments on the declining population in Vermont – as it is, our declining birth rate does not bode well economically for our state – this legislation will not help to improve our population or economic situation.
I am grateful that my mother chose life for me despite the hardships she faced when I was most vulnerable, I feel duty bound to speak for others who are also in this vulnerable position and relying upon their mothers to nourish the life that has begun within their womb.  Each of us owes a debt to our mothers who chose to give us life, can we not give our own children this basic right?  Please do not allow this bill to become law – rather, let us create a bill that will support life from conception until birth and also support the woman and her child.

[1] “(b) Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to 16 choose to carry a pregnancy to term, give birth to a child, or to have an 17 abortion. 18
(c) A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus shall not have independent rights 19 under Vermont law.”

2016 Week 15 In Review

The Week in Pictures:
John turned 1 today!!!  Where did the year go?

It's also only 9 days until Miriam's 1st Holy Communion & 8th Birthday!  This weekend, among other preparations for this special day, I made a white garment for her to wear next Saturday.   This week, through the  Catechesis of the Good Shepherd,  Miriam will be on retreat Thursday evening(4-6), Friday (9-4) and Saturday(9-4).  When she goes to Confession as part of a retreat with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in preparation for her First Holy Communion, she'll be clothed in a white garment and renew her baptismal vows.
We now have a "new to us" piano!  Miriam is excited to begin piano lessons again!
Father Henry Furman, our pastor, came to bless our new home.  We enjoyed a wonderful evening with him here for dinner - what a blessing!

This is the beautiful view from our front porch.

Highlights from the week:

My head is spinning :-)  Life is joyfully busy and each day if full, praise God!  I am so grateful for the many blessings and the joys of settling into our new home.  We are mostly out of boxes and the house is slowly becoming home.  We're looking forward to celebrating Miriam's First Communion next week and having friends join us for this special occasion.  Our prayers continue to be with each of you during this blessed Easter Season - please pray for us!

2016 Week 8 In Review

The Week in Pictures
A surprise package arrived from Aunt Susan who lives in San Diego and the kids were so excited to open their presents. :-)
Thomas shows off his fishing game.
William was so excited to assemble his "Tin Can Robot."
Miriam was excited to get new books from Aunt Susan!
Luke showing off his "bat ball" and new green shirt.
William posing in his cowboy attire just for fun.
We took a trip to our local Burger King play place for a Saturday lunch time outing.

William spent Saturday afternoon assembling his "tin can robot" from Aunt Susan.
Family Monopoly Night after haircuts for the boys
Sunday morning comics
Miriam helped make cinnamon roll bread today!

Highlights from the Week:

The week passed quickly with a day off for President's day on Monday (Phil had the day off so we had a nice day with Dad), the monthly home school co-op on Wednesday and Atrium on Thursday.

We are continuing through the home-buying process and everything looks good - the last big hurdle is the appraisal.  Hopefully the house is worth at least what we offered. :-)

We had to fish out a box of books from the garage for Miriam because she's reading everything in sight!  She's now read Charlotte's Web, the three Indian in the Cupboard books, The Saints in Story, several Calvin and Hobbes books  and many shorter library books - it's fun to seeing her enjoy reading so much!

Praise the Lord for His many blessings!  Life in Vermont is not without its daily challenges but among the challenges are so many blessings and affirmations that this is where God has called our family to be and we rejoice in His plan.  Phil continues to enjoy his work at the Diocese of Burlington and we continue to meet and get to know new friends in the area.  We definitely miss our many friends and the community we had in Green Bay but we know that the sacrifices God has called us to make are efficacious in His plan so we abandon ourselves to His Will and find comfort in His Sacred Heart.  May God bless each of you and your families!  Our prayers are with you - please pray for us as well!

2016 Week 3 in Review

The week in pictures...
We participated in the Vermont March for Life from Mass at St. Augustine's Church to the Capitol Building in Montpelier.  It's the first time I've actually been inside a capitol building and only the second time I've been to a State's Capital.
The day was beautiful!  Warm for this time of year and snowing beautifully.   It was a nice walk with the kids down the streets of Montpelier and a great gift to be able to share in this witness for life.

Thomas is modelling our science experiment for Catholic Schoolhouse this week having to do with the four states of matter and the density of different liquids.
The kids were just having fun tonight- so here's an action shot :-)

Highlights from the week:

Miriam's 1st Communion date is set for April 19th - her birthday.  She'll be doing her preparation with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd group which meets about a half hour north of where we are living but she is the only homeschooler in the group who will be making her first communion so we asked our pastor if he'd be willing to allow her to have her First Communion on a weekday - her birthday -  at our parish and he was willing.  That way the people we've been going to daily Mass with can rejoice in her first communion as well.

We had a nice meeting with the homeschool group this week and a fun play date with new friends who have kids our children's ages.  Miriam also had her "form B" evaluation at a teacher's resource and William had a more extensive session at the Stern Center.  I'm excited to have some support and extra resources as we work with his dyslexia.  I was impressed with how thorough their questions were and how they tailored the evaluation for William based on my comments.  He'll have 1 more day of testing in the language/ verbal area and then I look forward to hearing their report.

A neat tidbit about the Diocese of Burlington, which covers the entire state of Vermont, is that the first Bishop had a great devotion to St. Anne and the first Bishop of Burlington, Bishop Louis DeGoesbriand, consecrated himself and the whole diocese to St. Anne as well as the Immaculate Conception.  I was excited to learn this as St. Anne is my confirmation saint.

Finally, two more Simple Saints are painted and almost completely ready to go St. Andre Besset and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
